Is Reversing Type-1 Diabetes In The Horizon?

Did you know that Type-1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease? If not, you’re not alone. Many people are unaware of the seriousness of this disease.

Cause of Type-1 Diabetes

Type-1 diabetes is caused by the body’s immune system attacking and destroying the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This means that the body can no longer produce insulin, which is essential for regulating blood sugar levels. Without insulin, blood sugar levels can become dangerously high.

Symptoms

Symptoms of type-one diabetes include excessive thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, sudden weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor immediately as they could be indicative of diabetes.

Treatment

There is no cure for type-one diabetes, but there are treatments available that can help manage the condition. Insulin replacement therapy is one such treatment. This involves injecting insulin into the body on a regular basis in order to keep blood sugar levels under control. Other treatments include lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Stem Cell Research

News broke out in November of 2021 that a 64 year old man from Ohio, Brian Shelton, may be the very first individual to be cured of Type-1 diabetes. Mr Shelton participated in a clinical trial by Vertex Pharmaceuticals which included 17 patients with critical cases of Type-1 diabetes. The full study of infusing the stem cells to create the insulin-producing pancreas cells that Type-1 diabetics lack will take 5 years and is still only limited to the initial 17 patients, but there might be some great news in the horizon.

Below is an interview with Brian Shelton which goes into greater detail of the positive results that he has had thus far.
