A breakthrough stem cell treatment has likely cured a third person of HIV. The stem cell transplant combined adult stem cells taken from a relative’s blood along with umbilical cord blood that was genetically matched from a cord blood bank. The cord blood contained genetic mutation resistant to HIV which caused the patient’s immune system to rebuild itself to become HIV resistant and her own cells then became resistant to HIV. Patient stopped all her HIV treatments and 14 months later there are still no signs of the virus and she continues to test negative for HIV.
