Stem Cell Therapies Help AMD Patients See Again

A new clinical trial offers hope for patients with advanced dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study shows that a new stem cell therapy is safe and can improve vision in patients with this condition. [1]

Understanding AMD

Age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of permanent vision loss in adults over 60. The condition affects approximately 20 million adults in the United States. [1] It damages the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. People with AMD lose the ability to see objects directly in front of them.

Dry vs. Wet AMD

AMD has two forms: dry and wet. Over 90% of patients have the dry form. [1] In dry AMD, retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells malfunction and die. This cell death leads to vision loss. Current treatments can slow the disease but cannot restore lost vision.

A New Stem Cell Approach

The new trial uses a special type of adult stem cell. These cells are transplanted into the eye and can only become RPE cells. [1] This approach aims to replace the damaged cells and restore vision.

Promising Early Results

The first group of six patients in the trial received a low dose of 50,000 stem cells. The treatment was safe, with no serious side effects. [1] One year after the treatment, patients could read an average of 21 additional letters on an eye chart. [1]

Dr. Rajesh C. Rao, the lead researcher, said, “We were surprised by the magnitude of vision gain in the most severely affected patients.” [1]

Next Steps

The research team is now testing higher doses of 150,000 and 250,000 cells in 12 more participants. [1] If the treatment remains safe, the trial will move to later stages. This research offers a potential new therapy for millions of people with advanced dry AMD.
